The faculty for the courses are selected for their specialized knowledge and their ability to effectively present information in a classroom environment. Speakers are asked to make their presentations in a non-commercial format. In addition, they are asked to cover all facets of their topic and not limit their presentation to how their organization views a product or service. Finally, speakers are asked to adhere to a time frame, present their information in an interesting and easily digestible manner, cover specific material that is on the exam, and handle questions at the end of their presentations in an efficient and professional manner.

Reviews of the course materials are done at the end of each day and questions may be asked by the attendees. The course is concluded with an examination. Level I students will be tested on Friday. and Level II students will be tested on Sunday. The attendee must achieve a score of 90 percent or better to pass and be certified.

CHAIRMAN’S CORNER

Exterior Design Institute, since it conception in 1992, has continuously strived to service it members in an ever changing market, beginning with the original Inspector Certification Program to On-line Certification Training and Re-Certification early in 2001. In keeping with what the Founder and Original Board of Directors put in place, EDI recognizes that the day of the “EIFS ONLY” inspector is outdated and last year piloted the “Certified Building Envelope Inspector” program. This Level II course covers almost all types of building envelope materials including Cultured Stone, Cement Board siding, Vinyl Siding & Insulated Concrete Forms. The move to this new program was a natural evolution. The building envelope has the same problems regardless of cladding system. The EIFS Inspector Certification is a great foundation for the advanced Level II Certification. That said, the Level II certification starts where Level I leaves off, and incorporates all types of cladding and advanced building science. In the future there will be additional levels of certification addressing all types of roofs as well as energy auditing. Currently the Level II Certification is only available in the live seminar format. It is anticipated that an on-line version will be available in the third quarter of 2009.

As a side note, when EDI hosted the first Level II Certification course in Illinois, about 18 months ago, there were quite a few existing Inspector Members who attended to be Level II certified. It was interesting that when the final exam was given, many of our existing members passed the Level II certification with flying colors but failed the EIFS portion miserably. What this tells me is that we all need a refresher every now and then. Many of EDI’s most successful members attend a live seminar at least once a year. There is a discount for existing members ($395.00) who want to attend and audit the Level I class (no exam). Let us know when you register for Level II.

See you in Orlando,
Austin Scanlon, III
Chairman, EDI
