The American Iron and Steel Institute has published
Supplement No. 1 to AISI S905, Test Methods for Mechanically Fastened
Cold-Formed Steel Connections. The Supplement was issued to address questions
raised by the International Code Council Evaluation Service, Inc. (ICC-ES).
AISI S905-08, Test Methods for Mechanically Fastened Cold-Formed Steel
Connections, 2008 Edition and Supplement No. 1 is available for sale as an
electronic publication on AISI’s online store.
“The performance test methods in AISI S905 cover
determination of the strength and deformation of mechanically fastened
connections for cold-formed steel building components. In Supplement No. 1, a
test setup was added to cover the geometric condition of an application with a
small edge dimension, allowing the test method to be used for these special
cases,” Jay Larson, P.E., F. ASCE, Managing Director, Construction Technical
Program, said.
He commented that this information would impact the work of
code regulators and officials, code influencers, specifiers, designers,
researchers, and steel industry customer associations.
AISI S905-08 and Supplement No. 1 were developed by AISI’s
Committee on Specifications for the Design of Cold-Formed Steel Structural
Members. AISI S905-08 and Supplement No. 1 have been approved as American
National Standards by the American National Standards Institute. A new edition
of the standard is being formulated and is targeted for completion in either
late 2012 or 2013.
AISI’s codes and standards work is conducted under the
Construction Market Council of the Steel Market Development Institute (SMDI), a
business unit of AISI, which oversees the industry’s investment in advancing
the competitive use of steel by meeting the demands of the marketplace.
