The National Association of Home Builders named Jim Chapman Communities in Atlanta the Builder of the Year and Overture Virginia Beach the Community of the Year as part of the 2018 Best of 55+ Housing Awards.
The annual awards program, held during the International Builders' Show in Orlando, Fla., honors excellence and innovation in the design, development, lifestyle and marketing of housing that appeals to the mature market.
Jim Chapman Communities specializes in single-level, maintenance-free age-restricted communities in metropolitan Atlanta. Its private, often gated communities in a variety of architectural styles are set in prime locations near the North Georgia mountains, popular lakes and regional parks.
"Jim Chapman Communities has led the industry in innovative design and achieving excellence," said Steve Moore, chair of the Best of 55+ Housing Awards and senior partner of BSB Design, Inc. in Des Moines, Iowa. "They have not only succeeded in achieving the company's goals and moving forward during tough economic times, but they have contributed to the greater community."
After exhibiting it at the at the 2017 NAHB International Builders' Show, Jim Chapman donated a new three-bedroom home--at half the cost of construction--designed with active 55+ home owners in mind to an organization that works to end the cycle of family homelessness.
An active-adult community in Virginia Beach, Va., Overture Virginia Beach promotes a true sense of neighborhood with retirement living that satisfies almost all resident needs on site. Programs and gathering spaces are conceived to address physical well-being, encourage community and creativity and provide quality of life.
"The stylish living spaces are designed with hidden safety features, there when you need them, not thought about if you don't," said Moore. "This project had challenges that were solved with creative expertise, keeping the residents in mind."
Designed by Poole & Poole Architecture of Midlothian, Va., and built by Clancy & Theys of Newport News, Va., the 172-unit project makes the most of its waterfront site by including many outdoor gathering areas where residents can enjoy nature. To mitigate noise from a busy nearby roadway bridge and to enhance views and account for beachside weather, the design incorporates carefully configured building siting and special noise reducing and weather proofing materials.
The Best of 55+ Housing Awards program is sponsored by RMF, BSB Design, KTGY Architecture + Planning, Builders Design and Panasonic Eco Solutions.
