An item that has been in the marketplace for some time but not highly known in the field is the Guardian Safe-T ladder extension system. I have to give these guys credit on developing a product that helps to ensure a safe transition from an extension ladder to a rooftop or upper level floor. OSHA Standard 1926.1053(b)(1) states: "When portable ladders are used for access to an upper landing surface, the ladder side rails shall extend at least 3 feet (.9 m) above the upper landing surface to which the ladder is used to gain access". It’s not a well-known fact, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, 80 percent of all falls from ladders occur at the top of the ladder and 50 percent of falls from ladders occur during the transition from the ladder to a second surface.

The unit requires no tools to assemble, needs nothing in addition, and attaches with a simple knob without any damage to the ladder. Has a great handle rail that helps to step off and on the ladder and bumper pads to protect the eave of the roof or guttering. But most important, it helps to keep you and workers safe.

They are a little bulky to carry and have some weight to them. But even so and for the cost of around $199, it far outweighs a potential injury and an OSHA violation.
